Food Pets Should Never Eat!

We always like to share our food with our pets. Think twice before giving them that yummy human food, which might be dangerous to their health. Sometimes being a good pet parent, you should know when to say “NO” to your pet. Some things are just bad for your pet and may cause health issues. You might not realize that the food is causing health problems today, but might cause one in the long run! So here are some food treats to completely avoid for your pet’s best health:

Chocolate, Coffee, & Caffeine

A substance called Methylxanthines is present in these products, are dangerous for your pets if they intake it. If ingested by pets, it can cause diarrhea, vomiting, excessive thirst, panting, urination, and many heart problems. Please note this very carefully that dark chocolates are more dangerous than milk chocolate.

Alcohol

Alcohol not only damages human being’s liver and kidney but it affects pets too. Do not give any kind of alcoholic beverages or food to your pets. Alcohol not just causes intoxication but any other problems like poor breathing, vomiting, diarrhea, lack of coordination, central nervous system.

Onion, Garlic, & Chives

These ingredients are bad for pets as they damage red blood cells and cause anemia. A small dose might not cause much harm but if the intake is high it may lead to poisoning. There are several symptoms like vomiting, breathlessness, etc.

Salt & Salty Food

Consumption of salt in large amounts can cause sodium ion poisoning in pets. Salt can be fatal, so keep the addition of salt to a bare minimum so that you can share your food with your pets. If the intake of salt is too much, it causes vomiting, diarrhea, tremors, elevated body temperature and can even lead to death.

Coconut & Coconut Oil

Consuming coconut and coconut-based products in right amount do not cause serious problem to the pets but if the intake is excess, it can cause an upset stomach. Coconut flesh and milk of fresh coconut do not contain oil and can cause loose stools, diarrhea, stomach ache, etc. coconut water contains potassium and intake of potassium is not good for pets.

Avocado

Avocado mostly creates a problem for birds, rabbits, horses, ruminants and sheep and goats. It damages the cardiovascular and can even cause death. It causes swelling in horses, donkeys and ruminants and also causes edematous (an excessive amount of water fluid cells, tissues or body cavities) in head or neck.

Nuts

There is an excessive amount of oil and fats in nuts like almonds, pecans, walnuts which causes problems for pets. Fats may cause vomiting and diarrhea and even pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) in pets.

Citrus

The plant of citrus contains citric acid. Citric acid is found in many types of fruits like orange, lemons, and limes. If the ingestion of citric acid is high in pets it can cause irritation and possibly even central nervous system depression. If consumed in a small dose, it can cause minor stomach upset.

Raw/ Uncooked Meat, Eggs, & Bones

Bacteria named Salmonella and E. coli are present in raw meat and raw eggs that are harmful to your pets. Raw eggs contain an enzyme called Avidin that reduces the absorption of Biotin (a B vitamin), which leads to skin and coat problems. Feeding pets raw bones might feel a good option only if they lived in the wild. Feeding raw bones to domestic pets can cause harm to the pet. The domestic pets might choke on bones, or sustain a grave injury should the bone splinter or might destroy your pet’s digestive system. If you want to provide them with raw meat learn how to handle raw meat so that the risk can be reduced. The risk gets reduced if you freeze and is prepared properly before giving it to your pets to eat.

Milk & Milk Products

Milk and milk products contain lactose. The pets lack to break down the enzyme present in the milk. Some pets can handle dairy products but others are lactose intolerant. Milk and milk products can cause vomiting, diarrhea and gastrointestinal diseases. The fats ingested by milk product causes pancreatitis. Hence avoid giving milk and milk products to your pets.

Yeast Dough

Yeast dough creates gas in the pet’s digestive system. This is very painful for pets and can be life threatening . These yeasts produce a by-product called Ethanol which produces alcohol and is not good if pets ingest it.

Grapes & Raisins

Grapes and raisins contain a substance that is risky for your pets. The toxic substance causes kidney failure, vomiting and lethargy and can lead to death. It’s better to keep grapes and raisins away from your pets.

Candy, Gums, Peanut Butter, & Baked Goods

Xylitol is a substance present in these sweets and foods which is not good for the pets. If consumed it may cause vomiting, liver failure and eventually to death.

Please don’t let your pets eat any of these foods as they contain some of the other toxic substance in it which can lead to poisoning, vomiting, diarrhea, kidney or liver failures and even death. It’s recommended to stick to the diet given by the vet or research some healthy foods for your pets. Resist that puppy face and enjoy human food all by yourself.
